“….We went on a three hour birdwatching excursion during August in Zapata. Along the track to Las Salinas we saw 15 different species of birds and there were many more to see if we had stayed longer. We started the trip at 8 am, a little late as it is best to start just around day break. We went with a local Cuban birdwatching guide who had a
reference book with him of various birds in the area shown in images and by name….here is a list of the birds we saw…”

Special 4-day excursion in Zapata with local ornithologist & staying at a
beach resort hotel
Zapata is considered by ornithologists as the region with the greatest diversity
of birds in Cuba, with more than 170 reported species, among them 18 Cuban
endemic species and some local such as the Gallinuela de Santo Tomas and
Ferminias, with extremely restricted habitats. The area is also the preferred
spot for numerous terrestrial and marine migratory birds. In pursuit of our
wish to provide more special interest opportunities we are offering this unique
excursion, which you can combine with your other travel arrangements in Cuba.
Itinerary
Day 1
- Check-into Playa Larga Hotel in Zapata in the afternoon and enjoy the hotel’s
facilities and beach. Overnight at hotel.
Day 2
- Breakfast. Early morning transfer to bird watching area with a specialist
local English speaking Ornithologist. Packed Lunch included. After lunch
continue for afternoon bird watching session with a specialist local English
speaking Ornithologist. Transfer back to the hotel. Overnight at hotel.
Day 3
- Breakfast. Early morning transfer to bird watching area with a specialist
local English speaking Ornithologist. Packed Lunch included. After lunch
continue for afternoon bird watching session with a specialist local English
speaking Ornithologist. Transfer back to the hotel. Overnight at hotel.
Day 4
- Breakfast. Free day for leisure. Check-out of hotel and continue your travel
in Cuba.
What’s included:
Accommodation for 3 nights at the Playa Larga Hotel with breakfast.
Transfers to and from hotel to bird watching areas together with specialist
local English speaking ornithologist. Packed lunch on Day 2 & Day 3. 24 hr
service from our Havana Office.
Not Included:
Transfers to and from Zapata (rates for transfers from Havana & other
places in Cuba on request). Where meals and drinks are not mentioned as
included in itinerary. Staff gratuities.
