Day 2 Havana (North Coast)
The capital of Cuba since 1607, Havana (La Habana) is one of the largest and most vibrant cities in the Caribbean, and one of the most enchanting and fascinating cities in the world. With a population of over two million it has been through major upheavals since it was founded in 1519, with revolutions and uprisings leading to a large number of its beautiful buildings being left to decay over the years. Now many of these buildings are being restored and the city is alive with music, dancing and fine museums. Old Havana, the historic centre of the city, preserves a wealth of Spanish Colonial architecture and has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. American novelist Ernest Hemingway, who lived there for the last 22 years of his life, said in terms of beauty, only Venice and Paris surpassed Havana’s charm. During the Prohibition era of the 1920?s, Havana became a very popular holiday centre for Americans with nightclubs and gambling rampant up until 1959 and the revolution. Your guide will accompany you to the cigar factory where an official cigar factory guide will conduct the tour on a collective group basis. A tour of a cigar factory typically lasts for an hour. You will see the entire skilled process involved in making a hand rolled cigar, from the raw materials to the finished article. Cuban cigars are considered the world’s finest and can be seen at a number of Havana’s famous factories, such as “Romeo y Julieta”, “Partagas” and “La Corona”. Famous brand cigars such as “Cohiba” can be purchased at the factory shop.
Day 3 Havana (North Coast)
Modern Havana offers an alternative view to the attractive colonial heart of the city. The tour is very flexible. Typically it includes a visit to the Capitolio Building and a drive along the famous Malecon seafront (known as the Cubans living room 'sala') from Habana Vieja passing the historic Hotel Nacional to the high rise buildings and crumbling atmospheric streets of Vedado, and the Miramar residential area with some excellent examples of colonial villas and mansions. Continue onto the Revolution Square (Plaza de la Revolución), which is an imposing square with a building size portrait of Che Guevara, and a recently added portrait of Camilo Cienfuegos, it also features a giant statue of Jose Marti, Cuba’s most famous independence hero. A towering monument stands behind the statue. The square is where Fidel Castro made many of his famous speeches.
Day 5 Viñales (West Inland)
Experience the panoramic view of Valle de Vinales from the Mirador Los Jazmines overlooking the Viñales Valley with its spectacular limestone rock formations known as Mogotes rising almost vertically from the valley floor which is a patchwork of fertile plantations still ploughed by oxen and tobacco drying houses with steep sided palm roofs. You drive through the picturesque country town of Viñales passing classic cars and horse drawn carts on your way to the Mural de Prehistoria where a history of evolution is painted in bright colours on the side of a Mogotes. Viñales is well known for a large network of caves and you can visit one of these beautiful caverns. The most common cave to visit is the Indian’s Cave, Cueva del Indio, which involves a gentle walk and boat ride on a subterranean river.
Day 7 Trinidad (Central South Coast)
Tourism officials like to say Trinidad is a museum in itself. Those visiting the 500-year-old city will find Spanish colonial architecture, underscoring a colonial ambiance that marks the tiny city one of the country’s greatest attractions. Only a few square blocks in size, historic Trinidad is famous for its lovely, cobblestone streets, pastel coloured houses with elaborate wrought-iron grills, as well as majestic palaces and plazas. The city can be toured in a few hours, by foot or by horse-drawn carriage. The city’s is located near both the Escambray Mountains and the Caribbean beach. One of the area’s most interesting sights is the Valley of the Sugar Mills, which has been declared a World Heritage Site. The valley has around 70 long-standing sugar mills that are a reminder of the importance of sugar to the Cuban economy over the centuries. It has la Torre Iznaga, a 45 meter tower built by Alejo Iznaga Borrell in 1816. Twenty Kms from the city is Topes de Collantes, one of Cuba’s premier ecotourism centres. Another attraction is the Casilda Bay, which attracts both snorkelers and divers. A nearby islet has pristine beaches. Ancon Beach is a white sand beach that boasts a number of 3/4 star beach hotels. Ancón was one of the first new resorts to be developed in Cuba following the 1959 revolution. Along the Ancon Peninsula are three hotels: Hotel Costa Sur (South Coast hotel), Hotel Ancon, and the Brisas Trinidad del Mar (opened in 2002). The newest hotel in the city centre, Iberostar Trinidad Grand is rated 5*. Melia hotel group are currently constructing a hotel in the city centre.
Day 8 Santa Clara (Central Inland)
Santa Clara is home to the mausoleum which houses the remains of Che Guevara and sixteen of his fellow combatants killed in 1967 during the Bolivia campaign. There is also a reconstruction of Guevara derailing the train during the Battle of Santa Clara that was a decisive breakthrough in the revolutionary movement.
